Queerios Discussion Group
Topic: Queering Religious Texts
Location
The Center for Well-Being : 101
Date & Time
February 6, 2024, 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Description
Queerios is a discussion-based group open to all that focuses on the experience of being both queer and religious or spiritual.
Each week will focus on a different topic! We will start with a
student facilitator-led activity, and leave plenty of room for discussion, dialogue, and community building.
Queerios welcomes participation of all kinds and disclosure of any identities is never required to
join us. This group is not focused on any particular queer identity or
faith-based practice, and will feature topics that highlight a variety of identities and practices present in the UMBC student body.
Our first session of the semester will focus on the fluidity of religion and the multiple interpretations of texts as well as the stories and figures within them. Specifically covered will be deities such as Loki and Eros who have features that we would currently identify as queer. Rashi’s commentary on Joseph as well as Rice and Webber’s musical on him will also be discussed.
We welcome allies and community members who want to learn how to better support our students.
Snacks will be provided!
