Description

IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Morir de Pie (“Die Standing Up”) presents a deeply intimate and moving view into the lives of an extraordinary couple whose unshakable bond helps them to champion social, political, and sexual discrimination.  Profoundly inspired by Che Guevara, Irina Layewska, born a man, spent a large part of her youth fighting in the Cuban Solidarity Campaign.   As her medical condition worsened and it became increasingly difficult for her to function independently, she began an internal struggle with her gender identity that compelled her to explore her feminine side.  Her decision to transition to womanhood did not upset her union with her partner, Nelida, whom she married as a man.  In Morir de Pie, this couple bravely opens their lives to Mexican journalist Jaccaranda Correa, the director of this ground-breaking documentary.  The unique cinematography allows viewers an intimate glimpse into their daily challenges, inspirations, and aspirations for the future as they make the best of life in post-revolutionary Mexico.
